National Equality March ~ October 10-11 2009
While the National Equality March in Washington DC is fizzling to an end and photos from the day’s march begin to make their rounds on facebook and other social networking sites, we can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of sadness and loss. It’s terrifying how earnest and righteous these folks have become with their vague rhetoric of equality and inclusivity, even when talking about historically oppressive institutions like marriage and military. As if some how our inclusion in these institutions is going to magically transform them into a multicultural utopia where we can proudly kill muslim people for oil as part of a long term strategy for US imperialism and muse about our privileged tax status in a sinking economy where working class people are getting screwed out of just about everything.
So how do we fight the rhetoric of equality and inclusion in favor of transformational justice? How do we encourage our lovers and friends to abandon systems of domination in favor of reorganizing our lives in accordance with our own needs and desires. How do we say no to growing the prison industrial complex via increased Hate Crimes legislation while still fighting for our own safety and self-determination?
This website is a humble attempt at collating and archiving work that addresses the rhetoric of equality and inclsuivity, the corner stone of contemporary gay and lesbian (neoliberal) politics in the US. Much has been said critiquing the politics of inclusion and there is always more to be said, but it seems like an opportune moment to gather these materials to share them more easily with others.
